So you want to be a travel writer?
| Travel writing is a challenging and exciting occupation and has the obvious appeal of providing the opportunity to visit and report on destinations throughout Australia and internationally.
The great majority of professional travel writers in Australia are members of the Australian Society of Travel Writers, and most have an extensive newspaper or magazine background.
The field is very competitive, and the number of outlets for publication for articles has declined in recent years. However, the travel book market remains buoyant, as a browse through any major bookshop will confirm.
There is no formal secondary or tertiary level training in travel-writing available in this country, and the ASTW does not endorse correspondence courses. Perhaps the best approach for anyone considering attempting a travel-writing career is to (1) read widely the work of established writers, and (2) refer to some specific websites.
